I keep hearing versions of the same founder question. Should we let AI answer support tickets? Write production code? Clean data? Push changes? The right answer is not yes or no. The right answer starts with: what happens when it is wrong?
I recently listened to Professor Michael Wooldridge's Faraday Lecture, This Is Not the AI That We Were Promised. It mostly matched my view. Current models are not rational minds in the classical sense. But the wrong takeaway from that is that the output is useless. Useful is not the issue. Reliability under the wrong setup is.
With weak setup, you get confident nonsense. With good setup, you get leverage. That is why process matters more than philosophy here.

If you are a non-technical founder, your job is not to pick a side in an AI ideology war. Your job is to decide where AI gets to act on its own, where it needs review, and where it should stay out altogether.
Today, AI sits in the middle. It is not a toy. It is not autonomous intelligence either. It is a capable, inconsistent tool that gets better when your setup gets better.

Mistake one: "AI is hype, we should wait." That usually means slower research, slower delivery, and more timid experimentation while competitors learn faster than you do.
Mistake two: "AI is basically an employee, just let it run." That is how teams ship confident nonsense into customer-facing paths, spend weekends cleaning up, and discover too late that nobody owned the decision.
The winning position sits in the middle: move fast with AI, but keep judgment and accountability with humans.

Coding Is the Practical Example
In software, AI works especially well because we can check it. Tests, types, linting, CI, and code review catch a lot. Hallucinations are still a real risk, but they are a risk you can build around.
That is why I am more optimistic about AI in coding than in many other domains. We already have a verification culture. The model drafts. The system validates. The developer decides.

I see this in real teams already. AI can be a strong thinking and coding partner when the environment around it is disciplined.
What This Means for Non-Technical Founders
Your responsibility is to design operating constraints, not to micromanage prompts. You do not need to become a model obsessive. You do need clear rules for where AI is allowed to act and where human approval is mandatory.

Governance first, then scale.

AI is useful now. It is getting better fast. But if you hand it your business without process, you are not being innovative. You are being careless.
